Patrick Bateman is a pefectionist to the tee. He has created this own persona/identity that he himself must continue to follow in order to live up to the culture that surrounds him. He is a big shot with a very fancy loft and a very prestigious job.
Patrick Bateman however has been created by everyone else. He is only trying to live up to the expectations that goes with such a high-power and money career. Bateman does his best in living up to these expectations but slowly starts breaking down. He creates these sick fantasies that provide a twisted catharsis to him in order to live normally.
Patrick Bateman is a product of society's standards and the result of the baggage that comes with a luxurious life.
